Ulcerative Colitis is a chronic condition, where the colon and rectum become inflamed.
Small ulcers can develop on the lining of the large intestine, which can bleed and produce pus.
The cause is unknown. It is thought to be an autoimmune condition, however, many experts think it's a combination of genetics and environmental factors.
Some patients may go weeks or months with mild symptoms, followed by periods of flare-ups.
Recurring diarrhoea, which may contain blood, mucus, or pus
Abdominal Pain (periodically or constant)
Fatigue
Loss of appetite
Weight loss
Arthritis
Mouth ulcers
Problems with bones
Irritated / red eyes
There is no specific trigger for flare-ups to occur, however, gut infection and stress may be a potential factor.
To rule out serious complications, an X-ray or CT scan may be done.
To diagnose ulcerative colitis, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy may be performed to examine the level and extent of bowel inflammation. During this examination, a biopsy may be taken.
