What is Dystonia?
Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder, that causes involuntary muscle spasms and contractions1. These movements are often repetitive and cause chronic pain.
Estimated to affect at least 100,000 people in the UK2.
What may cause Dystonia?
There are 2 types of Dystonia, primary and secondary. Primary dystonia often begins in childhood and is caused by genetics. Secondary dystonia might be caused by :
Parkinson's disease
Cerebral palsy
Certain medications
Injury to the brain
Stroke
Myoclonus, Uncontrolled muscle spasms
parts of the body twist into unusual positions
Tremors
Excessive blinking
Symptoms may be triggered by voluntary movements. It is said that chronic pain can occur because of repetitive tremors and muscle spasms.
