What is Lipoedema?
Lipoedema is a chronic condition, where fat and lymph accumulate in the extremities. It is painful and can affect day-to-day life drastically.
It affects both sides equally
Lipoedema is more common in women
It is most common in the age group of 18 to 25
95% of women diagnosed with lipoedema, states that it has a moderate to severe impact on their ability to manage their weight
What causes Lipoedema?
The exact cause is unknown. The lymphatic system in the extremities, starts to stretch, dilate, leaking into the surrounding tissues (Microaneursyms). It may be caused by genetics and changes in hormones, such as :
During puberty
Pregnancy
Menopause
Excess weight on legs
Ecchymosis, Lower body bruises easily
Pain, Tenderness in affected limbs
Edema, Swelling
Varicose Veins, spider veins
Limited range of movement

MRI Scan, To monitor progression of microaneurysms (Where lymphatics start to stretch, dilate and leak)
