IBS stands for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It is a common condition that affects the gastrointestinal system. IBS is usually a chronic problem.
What causes IBS?
The exact cause is unknown, it has been linked to :
passing food through the gut too quickly or slowly
Sensitivity to certain foods
Oversensitive nerves in the gut
family history
Abdominal pains and cramping
Bloating
Diarrhoea/constipation
Passing mucus
fatigue
Nausea
Delaying/skipping meals
Eating too quickly
Eating fatty, spicy, or processed foods
Drinking lots of alcohol or fizzy drinks
Imaging In Diagnosis
IBS has the same investigations as IBD, to rule out IBD.
Colonoscopy, to examine intestines
endoscopic ultrasound, to check for swelling and ulcers
sigmoidoscopy, to examine the rectum and anus
CT or MRI, to check for signs of an abscess or inflammation
