What is Polycystic Kidney Disease?
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), is an inherited condition that causes cysts to develop in the kidneys.
In most cases, PKD develops between 30 and 40 years of age.
It is estimated 1 in 2500 people in the UK has PKD.
What causes Polycystic Kidney Disease?
Polycystic Kidney Disease is caused by a genetic fault, that disrupts the normal development of cells in the kidneys. This causes cysts to grow.
The affected genes are :
PKD1, 78% of cases
PKD2, 15% of cases
In 1 in 10 cases, the mutation of the genes develops for the first time and is not inherited. It is unknown what causes this to happen.
The growth of cysts can cause a wide range of symptoms, including :
Chronic, sharp, severe abdomen pain
Haematuria (Blood in urine)
hypertension, High blood pressure
Kidney stones
UTI's
Loss of kidney function
Imaging In Diagnosis
Ultrasound, to look for cysts in kidneys and other organs
CT or MRI Scans, to show the kidneys in more details
