Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic condition in which the spine and other areas of the body become inflamed1. Over time, it can cause vertebrae to fuse together.
AS tends to present in patients between 20 and 30 years of age2.
1 in 200 of the UK population is diagnosed with axial AS. It usually takes 8.5 years to get a diagnosis3.
Men are affected more than women4.
What may cause Ankylosing Spondylitis?
The cause is unknown however, in many cases, there is a link to the gene, HLA-B27. Research has shown that 9/10 people (90%) with AS carry the gene variant5.
Chronic back pain and stiffness
Limited range of movement
Arthritis
Enthesitis - inflammation where the bone is joined to a tendon
Fatigue
Associated with other conditions, Uveitis, Psoriasis, and IBD.
Lack of exercise and movement can increase stiffness. Such as laying for long periods of time on the bed.
