What is Chronic Fatigue syndrome (CFS/M.E)?
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic debilitating condition, that causes extreme fatigue and a wide range of other symptoms.
CFS can affect anyone, including children
It is more common in women
It tends to develop in the age range of 20 to 40.
What causes CFS/M.E?
The cause of CFS is unknown. However, there are a number of theories about factors that could lead to the development of CFS, these include :
Viral infection
Bacterial infection
Conditions that affect the Immune system
Hormone imbalances
Genetics
The most common symptoms of ME/CFS include :
Extreme fatigue
Fatigue after sleeping
Insomnia, problems sleeping
Cognitive concerns, memory, and concentration
Muscle and joint pain
Nausea and vomiting
Fast or irregular heartbeat
Lack of sleep
Repetitive movements
Imaging In Diagnosis
MRI Scan, to rule out other conditions causing the symptoms and look for any brain abnormalities
X-Ray, patients may have decreased heart size on imaging
There is relatively little known regarding which specific abnormalities are consistently observed across CFS patients
