What is Chronic Pancreatitis?
Pancreatitis is inflammation (swelling) of the pancreas. It can happen over a short period of time (acute) or over many years (chronic). Pancreatitis occurs when the enzymes become activated while still in the pancreas, which irritates the cells and causes inflammation. Repeated episodes of acute pancreatitis, it can become chronic. This is where there is damage to the pancreas causing chronic abdominal pain, and loss of function, which could lead to issues with digestion and diabetes.
What causes Chronic Pancreatitis?
Gallstones can trigger pancreatitis when they move from the gallbladder to the opening of the pancreas.
Excessive Alcohol consumption, alcohol causes the pancreas to become inflamed
Hypertriglyceridaemia, High blood fat levels
Damage or injury to the pancreas
Medication side effect
Hypercalcaemia, high blood calcium levels
Autoimmune pancreatitis
What causes Chronic is?
The main symptom of pancreatitis is severe central abdominal pain. It is described as a sharp or aching pain and it can travel along the back. Other symptoms include :
Nausea and vomiting
Indigestion
Pyrexia, High temperature
Jaundice
Swelling and tender abdomen
Tachycardia
Imaging In Diagnosis
Imaging modalities are used to determine the severity and assess the risk of developing serious complications.
CT Scan, to analyze the pancreas and damage
MRI Scan, to analyze the pancreas and damage
Ultrasound, to detect gallstones and look at the gallbladder
