Interstitial Cystitis (IC), more commonly known as painful bladder syndrome (PBS) is a poorly understood condition that causes pelvic pain and issues with passing urine.
It can affect people of all ages, however usually over the age of 30.
It is more common in women than men
Symptoms can come and go over time, flare-ups can be followed by improved symptoms.
What causes Interstitial Cystitis?
The exact cause is unknown, however, there are many links to what may cause it :
Damage to the bladder lining
A problem with pelvic floor muscles
The immune system causes an inflammatory reaction
It also may be associated with other chronic conditions, such as :
Fibromyalgia
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Intense chronic pelvic pain
Sudden strong urges to urinate
Needing to urinate more often than usual
Waking up several times during the night to urinate
Urinary incontinence
Haematuria (blood in urine)
The pain caused by this condition can be relieved after passing urine.
