Statistics about Back Pain
Back Pain, especially lower back pain, is very common. Approximately 1 in 6 people in the UK experience chronic back pain1. According to NHS England, back pain is the largest cause of disability, accounting for 11% of the total disability of the UK population2.
What may cause Back Pain?
There is a variety of causes for back pain, some people may have other comorbidities such as:
Bulging or ruptured discs
Arthritis
Osteoporosis
Ankylosing Spondylitis
Others may be caused by injury or no cause at all (idiopathic).
Chronic back pain can be described as feeling like :
muscle aching
shooting
burning
stabbing
Back Pain can radiate to other areas, such as the legs and the hips. Patients will also have a limited range of movement.
Many activities can worsen back pain symptoms, such as:
Laying down
Sitting down
Bending
Twisting
Lifting heavy items
Walking
