What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia (FMS), is a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body. Anyone can develop FMS, however, it is more common in women than men.
It typically develops between the ages of 25 and 55.
It is estimated that 1 in 20 people may be affected by fibromyalgia. However, it is an estimate as it is a difficult condition to diagnose and there is no specific test for the condition.
What causes Fibromyalgia?
The exact cause is unknown however, there are some factors likely to be linked to fibromyalgia.

Trauma, Injury, Infection
Associated with other conditions
Widespread pain, continuous pain which may feel like burning, sharp, stabbing, or dull ache.
Hyperalgesia - extremely sensitive to pain
Allodynia - feeling pain for something that shouldn't be painful. For example, touch.
Stiffness
Fatigue
Insomnia
Cognitive concerns
Headaches
IBS
There can be periods when symptoms get better or worse. Some factors that influence this is:
Stress
Changes in the weather
How physically active a patient is
Imaging In Diagnosis
Diagnosing Fibromyalgia can be difficult as there is no specific test to diagnose it.
To rule out other conditions, such as arthritis, x-rays, and other scans may be used. Blood and urine tests may also be included.
