What causes M.S?
M.S is an autoimmune condition, where the immune system attacks the myelin sheath of nerves, causing damage and scarring. The damage and scarring disrupts the messages traveling along the nerves. The exact cause is unclear, however, experts believe it is a combination of genetics and environmental factors. Some factors that may link to M.S :
genetics, if a patient has a family member with M.S. they have a 2% to 3% chance of developing M.S.
Lack of sunlight and vitamin D
Smoking, people who smoke are around 2x more likely to develop M.S
Teenage obesity
Viral infections
The symptoms of MS vary from person to person, it can affect any part of the body. The main symptoms are :
Fatigue
Ataxic gait, difficulty walking
Vision concerns, such as blurred vision
Problems controlling the bladder
Numbness or tingling
Muscle stiffness and spasms
Cognitive concerns
Chronic pain
Speech and swallowing difficulties
Depending on the type of MS, symptoms may come and go in phases or progress over time.
Movement, lifting, walking, standing.
Insomnia, unable or lack of sleep
Imaging In Diagnosis
MRI Scan, to evaluate damage and scarring of the myelin sheath. Finding this can help confirm a diagnosis.
