What is Functional Neurological Disorder?
FND describes a disorder with how the brain receives and sends information to the rest of the body. It is often diagnosed if symptoms match the criteria and can not be explained by another medical condition. The symptoms can cause significant distress and problems functioning.
Signs and symptoms vary however, this disorder usually affects movement and senses
What causes Functional Neurological Disorder?
The exact cause of FND is unknown. Symptoms may appear suddenly after a stressful event or emotional and physical trauma. Sometimes the condition may be triggered by a neurological disorder or nothing at all (Idiopathic).
FND is related to how the brain functions, rather than damage to the brain's structure.
Weakness or paralysis
Loss of balance
Tremors
Seizures
Numbness or loss of touch
Speech, slurred or inability to speak
Vision, double vision, or blindness
Hearing, deafness
Cognitive difficulties involving memory and concentration
