What is Sjögren's?
Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder, where the body's immune system attacks glands that secrete fluid. The effect can be widespread. Certain glands become inflamed, which reduces production.
It has a higher prevalence in women
Symptoms usually start around the time of the menopause, when oestrogen levels begin to fall
There are 2 classifications of Sjogren's syndrome :
Primary - when it develops by itself and not as a result of another condition
Secondary - when the syndrome develops in combination with another autoimmune disorder, such as lupus or RA.

What causes Sjögren's?
Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune condition, which means the immune system attacks the glands. The reason for this remains unknown, but research has suggested a link to genetics, environmental and hormonal factors.
Certain people are born with specific genes that make them more vulnerable to issues with the immune system. If these patients have an environmental factor, such as a virus, it can trigger this condition.
Oestrogen also seems to play a role. Falling oestrogen levels can contribute to dryness.
The most commonly reported symptoms are dry mouth and eyes. Symptoms associated with dry mouth include :
Tooth decay and gum disease
Dry cough
Difficulty swallowing and chewing
Repeated fungal infections
Symptoms associated with dry eyes include :
Painful, burning, stinging, and itchy eyes
Irritated and swollen eyelids
Photophobia, sensitivity to light
Other symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome :
Dry skin
Fatigue
Muscle pain
Joint pain, stiffness, and swelling
Vasculitis, inflammation of blood vessels
Dyspareunia, Painful intercourse
Progression of condition
Weather, wind
Imaging In Diagnosis
Ultrasound and MRI scans are used to diagnose Sjogren's Syndrome.
Ultrasound looks at the salivary glands to see if they are enlarged or have cysts. This determines if it is in the early or late stage.
MRI Scans, look at the involvement of the salivary glands and lacrimal glands, specifically the parotid. It may appear to have a honeycomb appearance and fat deposition may be seen.
